Research In-Progress and Recently Completed

Measuring seat belt usage before and after a social norming program in Richmond, VA. PRG is surveying seat belt usage in two Virginia communities to determine change over time.

How is at-fault determined in alcohol related crashes? PRG is collecting and coding crash reports from across the U.S. to determine what influences an officer to say who is  "at fault."

What happens to traffic crashes when law enforcement reduces the number of traffic stops? PRG is comparing the number of traffic stops and traffic crashes in a trio of jurisdictions with control sites for comparison.

What is the estimated seat belt usage rate across all Native American nations? PRG  is working with 18 sovereign Indian Nations to estimate the seat belt usage across all Native American lands.

Development of an A-pilar measurement system for building 360-degree blind zone maps.   PRG assisted IIHS to test and refine a new system and technology for measuring passenger vehicle A-pilar site obstruction.

How does one effectively communicate with high-risk populations?
Communication and outreach are keys to imparting a safety message. High-risk and hard to reach populations are often harder to reach. PRG is using discussion with experts in the U.S. and from afar to identify what elements are believed important for successful communication.

What are state governments and law enforcement doing to address the distracted driving problem? PRG is surveying a diverse group of police agencies and state government officials on their approaches in response to a rising number of distracted driving crashes.

What are the results of Kentucky's High Five rural traffic safety program efforts? PRG is assisting the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in its second year of the High Five Rural Traffic Safety program.

What elements are necessary for a child safety device diversion program?  PRG is documenting the elements and processes necessary for delivering training to offenders using a court diversion program.

Statewide Observational Surveys
PRG now conducts statewide adult belt use surveys for nine states' Highway Safety Offices, plus the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the U.S. Virgin Islands' Police Department. 

PRG conducts child restraint device surveys and distracted driving surveys in four of these states.

NHTSA published PRG report on the High Five rural seat belt program efforts with results.

PRG provided assistance to NHTSA's Office of Communication and Consumer Information with development and testing of advertisements to reach rear seat passengers who are not buckling up. PRG evaluated publicity materials in two test markets, Syracuse, NY and Hartford, CT. Our Final Report is coming soon!

PRG helped two local communities to develop and evaluate the Buckle Up Phone Down (BUPD) programs. BUPD programs developed in Sioux Falls, SD and Jackson, MS. PRG produced a campaign video for the Jackson, MS campaign. Click the image and turn up the sound.

PRG used lidar devices to measure e-scooter speeds on roadway segments and sidewalks in Austin, TX and Washington D.C.
